Stay alert while using IT tools for news sources

Experts at a workshop in the city advised journalists on Saturday to remain alert while using information technology (IT) tools like internet, social media, messenger services and e-mail for accurate sources before publishing any news.

They also urged media personnel to safeguard their accounts of various technological tools from the clutch of cyber miscreants as they often attempt to steal sensitive information.

The experts were speaking at a workshop on 'Cyber crime awareness and investigation', jointly organised by Institution of Diploma Engineers Bangladesh (IDEB) and Cyber Crime Awareness (CCA) Foundation.

The programme was attended by IDEB general secretary Shamsur Rahman as the chief guest with CCA Foundation member secretary Kazi Mustafij in the chair.

CCA Foundation cyber security experts Mehedi Hasan and Tanvir Hasan Joha moderated the workshop.

Mehedi Hasan said media people often have to depend on internet and mobile phones for gathering information from various sources, whose improper use sometimes leads to virtual embarrassment.

He recommended cautious use of the IT tools like social networking sites, messenger apps, and e-mails to pick accurate information.

"There are rumours and wrong information online everywhere which might result in confusion among the newsreaders if a journalist doesn't remain careful about the sources," he said.  Tanvir Hasan discussed various aspects of country's law relating to information and communication technology (ICT).
